2016 International year of pulses


United Nations proclaimed 2016 the international year of the pulses.

Pulses are annual leguminous crops. It yields between 1-12 seeds or grains within a pod. The term “pulses” is limited to crops that are harvested solely for dry grain for feed humans and animals.

Some good examples are lentils, peas, chickpeas and beans. They are an important source of plant-based proteins and its constituents, amino acids.

Recalling on its physiology, it is interesting to know about its role as a nitrogen-fixing because can increase soil fertility.

As an aliment, is a healthy diet component due to its effect on preventing diseases as obesity, diabetes, coronary conditions and even some types of cancer.
